My academic colleagues blame the state
For poor funding of their bright ideas.
In Soviet times, they had much better fate:
Well-paid, respected jobs without fears.
Nowadays, pure science is in neglect:
Still jobs for life, but neither fame nor money;
The army's got the knowledge to detect
Where enemies are flying, swimming, running.
As Maxwell, Darwin, Chebyshev were rich,
So poor were the low-born and orphans,
And Borodin or Faraday couldn't reach
The basic level of the living comforts.
Life calling and profession - when they've met,
That's luxury that not that many get.
