Jeb s Collection The Car
Working steady jobs after school, and then working full-time once he dropped out of school, John was able to save enough money fairly quickly. Unfortunately, his knack for saving money did not improve his ability to drive. He totaled his two first cars. The first, he wrapped around a tree because he was speeding and the second wasn’t his fault; someone ran a stop sign and sideswiped him.
In the first accident, John was just careless, he was busy watching two girls on the side of the road and didn’t notice that the tree had appeared before him.
After the second accident, his mechanic friend told him to junk the car. Even though it was only dented, he could sell it for a few hundred dollars and then get the money from the other guy’s insurance company and go out and buy a decent car. John took his advice and started checking out reputable used car lots.
At Fred’s Used Car Lot, a few special edition cars were kept inside the building, and as beautiful as they were, John couldn’t afford them. So he started browsing through the lot.
One of Fred’s assistants noticed him, but he decided to blow John off because John looked poor. But Lou, another salesperson, knew that John had some insurance money to spend and pounced on John in the hopes of getting good
commission.
While all this was going on, John had found it. It was a beauty. It was a rebuilt 1962 Mustang, candy-apple red, two inch whitewalls, a ram-charger, glass-packed mufflers, and all chromed-out. Lou saw that look in John’s eyes and knew he had him. Lou began to explain its features: ‘The engine is a 350, 180 horse power, has been rebuilt and only has 15,000 miles on it. The engine is a new V-8 and has 24 valves, so it’s fast. It’s got an anti-rust paint job on it and we offer a one-year bumper-to-bumper warranty.
He decided to let John test-drive the car. They got in. It was a five speed manual transmission. Like the original, but the inside had been redone. There was a CD-player inside, 25 watts per channel and 2 Pioneer 80 watt speakers in the rear and 2 40 watt speakers in the front. Someone had added electric windows and side view mirrors. The seats were leather and seemed barely worn in. John put on his seat belt, released the parking brake and they were off.
They drove around for about 20 minutes and John was sold. Unfortunately, the car cost more than he had, so he needed a loan from the bank. So John put a down payment on the car to hold it for him and went to the bank to see if he could get a loan and what kind of percentage he could get. Luckily where he worked, the boss could vouch for him and so the bank agreed to loan him the money and take a lien on the car with 9% interest rate for one year.
With money in hand, John returned to the dealer and paid for the car. They gave him the title, and temporary registration. The first thing was to find cheap insurance. His state required at least a minimum of liability insurance. Unfortunately, he was a single, male, just 20 years old so his premium was the highest. But he found something reasonable within a week.
Once he had all the paper work straightened out, he was sent to enjoy his car. Of course, as luck would have it, a week later someone stole his car, it was a beauty few could resist, and by the time the police found it, the car was trashed. Again, good thing for insurance, or he would have been out of luck.
