Of simpler things
Khalil Gibran. The Prophet
1. No future in the past.
I'm rid of a shady past
where future doesn't belong,
but for a grammar form,
entirely formal,
a connection of a withering flower
to the bud.
Outside the connection,
neither one does exist.
I'm rid of my past.
Are they rid of me?
I am. Are they?
2. The lock and key problem.
Whoever may hold the key,
that is not important.
The key is not important.
There is no lock.
It cannot be proved.
It will be denied.
What cannot be moved,
will be contrived.
3. The apple worm thing.
We know of simpler things.
An apple is a simple object.
The worm is a complex thing.
Who contrived the worm,
to prove the natural apple simplicity:
the mind of the worm,
or the mind of the apple?
4. Starlight and back.
Stars are dust particles
smashed against the window-pane,
englassed and diffused,
crystalline, crisp and clear.
This light comes from within,
and flows without my room,
starlight and back.
So simple, in the complexity
of the heart.
