Poppy Lay
to my baby daughter Alice (1979)
1. No caress,
No spring
No rain.
Nowhere else
It’s green.
Just pain,
Came the pain.
2. I say: I cry
Into the sky,
I pray (in vain)
For a drop
of rain,
drop of rain.
REFRAIN A : For a drop,
A drop of clear water,
Not for me,
For just my baby daughter,
Oh, I pray -
Good Heavens-
For a droppie,
Just to pour
On my daughter’s
Scarlet poppy.
Not for pouring
Cats and dogs,
Not for showers,
frogs and mud.
Just to water
My Daughter’s
poppy-bud,
In a simple
Flower pot,
Flower’s cot.
It’s so hot!
3. Oh, it’s hot,
Dry and hot!
Dryness, stop!-
We need a drop-
4. A drop of rain,
I’m asking for,
I’m praying for,
I’m wai’ing for
In vain? Again?
5,. White and dry
Are lawns and lanes,
I don’t cry,
I have no gains,
6. You hear I cry
Into the sky
I pray again
For a drop of rain,
Is it in vain?
Do I want too much?
Just a gentle touch -
It’s not too much!
REFRAIN B.
Oh, Good Heavens
Heard my prayers
And complains!
Look and listen
To the falling drops!
It rains!
And we’re watching
The rain
Through pains
And planes.
Thank you,
Heavens,
Thank you,
Clouds:
Dryness –wanes!
Though oh,
Poppy poor,
I am not sure,
I am afraid,
Alas,
The rain’s
A bit too late,
A bit too late!
7. Everything
Got fresh and green
But the poppy
Is not seen
Where’ s it been?
8. Baby’s poppy’s
Dead and dry,
Dry, fragile…
Good Heavens, why?
Tell me , why?
9. Sleep my daughter,
Sleep, stop cry’ng,
We will water
a dandy-lion,
It will rain,
the sun will shine !
10. Smile, my baby,
We’ll make maybe
Another try,
Another try...
Sleep, don’t cry!
