The Toll

The bell rings to a sermon
It calls us all
The bell rings to a prayer
Raise your voice with the toll.

Your neighbors ask for help
They need no gold
It’s not a begging of misery,
They beg for a hand to hold.

The word goes to the people
It makes them strong
It’s not a word of vanity –
Wealth and rat race are wrong.

The bell rings to piety
To see the world in true light
It rings to self-devotion –
Regard your honor in the fight.

Every man has the virtue
That can cure and guide
Every man has the prayer
That helps rise up, not hide.
