Dedication

Who holds the key to my future?
The palm of my hand, the candle,
The coffee cup and the mirror,
The card that waits to be opened,
My zodiac constellation.
I’ll gather them at my table,
I’ll ask them eternal questions.
They’ll tell me of many losses,
Of new wrinkles, of getting tired.
I’ll kick them out of my house:
Tell me something I don’t know already!
And I’ll sit in my room all alone.

When you come through the door in silence.
You will tell me none of my fortune.
You will not console me with comfort.
We will have a tea, watch a movie.
We will talk about nothing special.
We will take up space with our bodies
And excite the air with our voices.
We don’t need to look at each other,
We both know and feel without looking:
Though we're bound by times and spaces,
We are not together forever.

That lives in a shadowy forest,

That finds his beautiful lady 
To live happily ever after.
While you’re next to me on the couch,
Sharing with me our old throw,
Holding my hand and smiling,
We are only here for this moment.

You and I have covered much ground
But that ground is not what we cherish.
You and I have built understanding
But now’s not the time to be talking.
I'll just put my head on your shoulder
Like a swimmer rests on the water
When the ocean is breathing calmly,
And we’ll sit hand in hand in silence
As the rain outside gets stronger,
And I’ll take the key to my future
And throw it out the window.
