In times when Fate Inexorable decided
To tear my heart to pieces in remorse
My frantic Earl, sincere and noble-minded,
Corrupted me for better or for worse.

He offers me a modicum of feeling
But I would rather tacitly abstain:
There is no sense in all this mortal reeling -
My sun has set; my moon is on the wane.

My wounded soul is sweltering and swelling,
The outcry, however, is unheard.
I wish I had more worldly time on dwelling
In your fair heart uncanny and absurd.

Love’s faint echo turns into a funnel
Of halcyon days, from hoping ever-green,
Which promise: at the ending of the tunnel
There will be Life majestic and serene.
