Luck of the Irish

“Luck of the Irish” is a well-known idiom in English. Most often you can find it on different Irish souvenirs, cards, even in some Irish songs. Though the meaning of that expression is still unclear. There are two ideas about what does “Luck of the Irish” mean. Some people say that the word “luck” is used here ironically. There were very hard periods in the history of Irish people, periods of famine, of long lasting bloody conflicts with England. So there is no doubt initially “Luck of the Irish” meant “bad luck”.

But after centuries of struggle, Ireland succeeded in reaching its goals. Ireland (with the exception of its Northern part) became an independent state. Now it develops its economy and becomes really better place to live. And Irish people started to believe that “Luck of the Irish”  is a good luck indeed.

Ireland and Armenia have much in common. Celtic cross stones are similar to our khachkars, though they have different forms, but in fact one cannot find anything like this in the rest of Christian world. As I have mentioned above, the Irish suffered a lot as we did. There are similarities even in tunes, and professional musician give serious explanation to that, which I cannot bring out here, since I’m not familiar with that terms and don’t understand much of that staff, and I guess you do not too.

The Christianity and Pagan religion in Ireland live in perfect harmony. The adoption of Christianity there was not so bloody, as it was in the rest of Europe, neither it was bloody in Armenia, despite some people say now it was, but it cannot be compared with Italy for instance.

According to Dion Fortune, British occultist and author, the Irish is the only nation in contemporary world, which has adults as sensitive as children. They are open to very gentle energies. Being very religious, even now, when the rest of Europe becomes more and more atheistic, Irish people are very jolly, they like having fun, drinking a lot, and, of course, they are really crazy about music.

Irish drinks also have very gentle taste. I prefer Guinness to all other sorts of beer, and Jameson is my favorite whiskey. Probably, everyone has heard about Irish cream a cream liqueur based on Irish whiskey, cream, and other ingredients such as coffee. That flavor is usually used in cappuccino, MacCoffee, and there are very delicious Irish liqueurs with Irish cream, such as Sheridan’s, Carolans, Beileys (which is balm in fact, but can be drunk separately as a liqueur).

Irish folk music is very popular all around the world. Everyone know traditional Irish step dancing Riverdance – a gorgeous theatrical show performed on many stages of numerous countries. I am really fond of Brain Finnegan playing Irish flute.  One can understand the importance of music for Irish people from the image of harp on the Coat of arms of Ireland.

So, as you have already understood I’m mad about Ireland. Several weeks ago a mysterious thing has happened with me. I have many flowers and plants growing in my room. And suddenly I saw a strange plant in one of my flowerpots. As it grew up, I’ve found out that it is shamrock - three-leaved old white clover, which St. Patrick having used it as a metaphor for the Christian Trinity, and so it became a symbol of Ireland. So, probably, it’s my portion of luck the Irish.
