Zbigniew Herbert Mr. Cogito s Abyss

It is always safe at home

but right beyond the doorstep
where every morning Mr. Cogito
starts his daily walk
he runs into- abyss

no it’s not the Pascal’s abyss
nor it’s the Dostoyevsky’s abyss
this is the abyss
sized right for Mr. Cogito

bottomless days
horror evoking days

walk behind him like shadows
slow down in front of the bakery
read Mr. Cogito’s paper over his shoulder
on the park bench

endless like eczema
devoted like a dog
too shallow to fit
his head hands and feet

one day maybe
the abyss will grow
the abyss will ripen
and become important

if only he finds out
what water it drinks
what seeds it should be fed

now
Mr. Cogito
could collect
a few fistfuls of sand
and fill it all
but he’s not doing this

because when
he comes back home
he leaves his abyss
outside
wrapping it meticulously
in a piece of the old fabric
