HH Karmapa Thaye Dorje

HH Karmapa Thaye Dorje, 29, was recognized as the 17th Karmapa by the 14th Shamarpa, in accordance with the tradition of the Karma Kagyu lineage. The Karma Kagyu lineage is one of the four strands of Tibetan Buddhism, and precedes that of HH Dalai Lama by over 200 years. HH Karmapa Thaye Dorje was born in Tibet in 1983. In March 1994, he and his family escaped from Tibet to India. The same month he came to New Delhi, where during a welcoming ceremony Shamar Rinpoche formally recognized him as the 17th Karmapa. In November 1996 he became a monk by receiving refuge vows in a large ceremony at the Bodhgaya Temple. He then was given the name Trinley (meaning Buddha activity) Thaye (limitless) Dorje (unchanging). His interests include sketching, walking, Beethoven, Mozart, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Lawrence of Arabia, and Dharma books - books about Buddhism.
