Quarter of a rondo

Be cool tough and strong
Walk within the boundaries
Let the damn thing hurt

Later on you'll look back
And say to yourself
That it didn't hurt in vain
That you have learned from it
That you have grown from it
That feelings are God's gifts
That we're made to cry
Just as we're made to laugh

And you will praise yourself
For being rational and smart
Enough to be in control
Despite the pain once so bad
That it burned a hole inside
Begging to come out and fill
The universe like an ocean

And you will calm yourself
With pleasures attainable
Like a cup of hot tea
And a good conversation
With an old faithful friend

But then all of a sudden
One word will rush in
From behind the stone wall
From inside the grave
From under the pile of weights
Reaping it all apart
And the fresh pain
Will pierce and choke you

And you will want to scream
Beat your head against the wall
Scratch the walls
Squeeze the wine glass into pieces
Over the DREAM that will never
ever
ever
ever

And then you'll take a deep sigh
Lift yourself off the chair
Slowly very very slowly
First standing up on your legs
Then straightening your arched back
Then raising your head
Then looking up
And you will recall how to

Be cool tough and strong
Walk within the boundaries
And let the damn thing hurt
