I wish I had a friend...

I wish I had a friend when I was younger,
A friend who'd care enough to share this:
There are unlucky ones that live among us,
Those who have blindly walked into abyss.

Now I am one of those who just keeps falling,
I've made a step and there's no turning back.
I wish someone would rush towards me calling
Before I stepped onto the slippery track.

Don't get me wrong, they told me: "It's a bad choice.
Don't do it - it'll hurt you." Many times.
Forbidden fruit made sweeter by adult voice...
So I have tried it and ignored the signs.

Had I but known that once you've tried the matter,
Forever it's imprinted on your mind!
It stays with you - there's no way to forget it,
It pulls you down. Relief? Not yours to find.

It's like the ground's gone, nowhere to stand on...
I beat my wings with all the force I've got.
Those choices, some quite innocent and random -
The curse that glues me to the same old spot.

The power of our mind, with memories its fuel,
Propels into the future or glues us to the past,
It can be helpful, can be harsh and cruel,
Once memories are there, be sure they will last.

Элиза! Я не пользовалась английским уже лет 15.
Ностальгирую, люблю читать стихи на нём вслух.
Очень понравилась неспешная ритмичность Ваших утончённо-грустных стихов!
Удачи!

Thank you so much, glad you like them! Good for you that you can still understand it after 15 years. But then again... once something is in your mind, it's there forever.
