The Coming Day - older version

A day may come in ever-running Time
When mortal eyes shall see the Immortal’s face,
When mortal minds soar to realms sublime
And mortal hearts burn with the endless Grace —

Then breaking rocks of the eternal Night,
God-lightnings leap from the supernal skies,
Like flaming birds from heavens of deathless Light,*
Smiting our hearts with glory of Paradise.* —

And this rebellious, fallen, struggling earth
Shall see again rays of the sacred Sun,
And we acquire a new spiritual birth
To find our path to a diviner man.

The day is coming and our souls foresee*
The honey-taste of immortality*.

Ritam

This sonnet was read few years ago by a very close disciple of Sri Aurobindo Amal Kiran whom Sri Aurobindo considered the greatest spiritual poet among his disciples. He has written the following comment: “Very good” and marked as outstanding the asterisked lines.

<To find our path to a diviner man.>

This line at that time run, “Approaching steps of a diviner man.” and was also marked by Amal Kiran as outstanding. Later I realized that it corresponds closely to the line from Sri Aurobindo’s 'Savitri', “Approaching eyes of a diviner man…” (Savitri, p. 344) and was, perhaps, subconsciously drawn from it. Recently I have changed it while reworking the whole poem.
