Only the sea

Only the sea -
that physical
and bountiful abstraction -
of all that is terrestrial,
is vast enough:
omnipotent yet mutable,
manifold yet nebulous,
steeped in undeciphered
and mysterious vitality;
only that subaquatic galaxy,
immense with minute subtleties,
profound and unpredictable,
comprehends
our sense of the ineffable.

An aperture in masonry,
a window with a glimpse of bay
can telescope eternity,
focus the mercurial,
invite the mind to contemplate
the poetry of energy.
