Temple of Athena Parthenis
No other phantom
haunts our consciousness
with singular persistence
unaccountable as this:
as if all we once had
and all we were
and all we lost
could be recaptured
in a gesture,
in a living sepulchre,
a Pyrrhic victory of spirit
contemplating its decline
amid a rising tide
of structures less defined,
an absence of philosophies
to comfort us; where famine
masquerades as banquet,
hunger is unsatisfied.
We worship this
pale victory of perfect mind,
fading in the toxic pall
that stalks our time,
and crave the memory
of certainties
we sense we left behind,
reflected in this consummate
geometry, the empty shrine.
