For more than a hundred years
The women were blamed and for everything:
Whether it was a dump spring,
Or colic in a stomach or birthmarked cheek.

By women from Magnolia street..
The locust and the lightning,
The drowning and fighting,
The other queer cases
Were arrogated, added
To those women blamed.
To every hint of trouble,
Misfortune or the squabble,
They pointed the fingers
On those women near.
They tried to avoid passing
Or peering over the fence,
The black wrought-iron made,
That circled like a snake.
