This documentary film highlights the dilemma faced by many native cultures as their traditional lifestyle disappears and focuses on the efforts of one person, in particular, trying to preserve her ancient heritage: Vera Giuneut.

Producer and director Igor Dadashev first conceived of the idea of preserving examples of the native traditions of the Russian Far East when he attended native celebrations in Magadan, Russia in the late 1990’s. Over the course of several years, he collected stories, performances, and footage, until finally, when he met Vera Giuneut at Hebdenek (a traditional New Year’s celebration) some five years ago, he realized he had found the perfect subject around whom to construct his film.

Vera Giuneut, the daughter of a shaman, is a member of the Chukchi tribe of the Far East of Russia.  This stand-alone work, filmed in Magadan, is comprised entirely of original video footage and still photographs, including recordings of modern celebrations in which participants perform songs, dances and rituals, and describe ancient tribal traditions; studio clips; natural and urban landscapes of the Kolyma Region; and scenes of the vestiges of the Chukchi population who still follow the traditional nomadic lifestyle.

The soundtrack consists of interviews with Vera Giuneut conducted by Igor Dadashev in which she relates her early memories and the stories of her parents in the style of an oral history, and live performances and studio recordings as she sings traditional songs, including songs done in the “throat-singing” style of the Russian Far East.  Translation of the original Russian is accomplished with a voice-over in English interspersed with narration providing anthropological and ethnographical information about the indigenous tribes of the region.
