The sun has thrust
sheer auric fingers
into blades of grass,
as if reluctant
to relinquish day.
Their chlorophyll
is charged with gold,
the living fibres
become rays, shadows
cast by saplings
striping them
in bars of grey.
The fierce embrace
of chlorophyll and lingering,
late amber light
will weaken as the sun departs
and grass turns colder green,
then dark.
