Bias around us. Can we change it? Should we try?
A year ago, my best friend who lives in Chicago came to the U.S. from Mexico and was shot 3 times. The people who did it were never found and no one knows the reason why. Why he was shot? This question is still in my head. He wasn’t doing drugs, stealing, he had no police record. He was a great guy who loved sports and had a hard life. One of the main reasons why his family moved to the United States-hard life. He was shot for no reason, just because of bias, because he is Mexican, just because he happened to be born there. He almost died because of the amount of blood that he lost, but he was lucky and stayed alive. After that I decided to find out why cases like this have a place in our modern, almost perfect society and can we find the way to change them. That’s my topic and my story. I was able to come up with a few arguments why it happens: history, media and fear…
In the history of the U.S. bias was always part of the daily lives. You will ask how? At first-bias to Native Americans, truly original owners of this land, and then to the African Americans, even to women, and now to the Mexicans. But what is strange to me that now native Americans, black and women, and how they were fighting for the independents, for life, where they will be treated equally-is a great part of history. Maybe someday bias to Mexican people will be replaced with something else, but who will be in their place? I think that society just needs somebody to blame for everything, society just needs enemies to fight with. For example, Hitler had chosen the Jewish as his main enemies and the cause of almost all of his problems. But couldn’t society choose enemies that can protect them self and fight back? American society claims itself to be strong, powerful, not afraid of a challenge, with great moral standards a modern society (country). But why and how can they fight Mexicans? It’s not logical to me, where is the honor to fight somebody who couldn’t do anything about it/? Is it moral to beat somebody who couldn’t answer to your blows? I will leave these questions on the shoulders of the Americans. I’m sure I will find a lot of people with totally opposite points of view. They will say that they are just trying to protect themselves, and that the attack is the best protection. But I will ask you again, why Mexicans don’t use this kind of tactic? Also you can say that they are “welcome” to fight back. But let’s see, who can win in this fight; big, powerful country with great sources or a small country that needs help, not a fight? Yes, a small country can win too, but it will take a lot more for them to do it. Do you think it’s fair? Hm... For me answer is obvious – no.
Media. Media-is a huge part of our life, it almost controls our wishes and needs. In the 21st century nothing can be done without the media. Media guides us, changes our points of view, even has conversations with us. What first do we do in the morning? Turn on the morning news, and then we can buy newspaper, look at news on the internet; listen to the radio in the car. And usually we believe what we hear or see in the media. It reminds me about roman theater, when the public agrees to any kind of show, they just need that drive in blood, adrenaline…Yes, may be it’s a little bit different, but try to remember what do you feel when you are watching your favorite TV show or interesting game? Yes, you feel adrenaline, you want more action, and that’s my point about comparing the media with arena of Roman Coliseum, in both causes the representation center was the case of violence and cruelty. According to the chronicles of those times (and besides to set of the removed films) the arena atmosphere has been filled with the adrenaline rush, with feeling that hard to find word that will express it the best. When the crowd is going wild, when you agreed for any kind of action, just to keep this feeling going, the same feelings are tested also by you. Why I’m talking about violence, Coliseum and movies? Sounds kind of wired, doesn’t it? Let me explain then. When I look at tabloids of the movies, that had the most success in public, what do I usually see? Movies, with stories based on violence. You can protest and say that American people just love action, but why should action always bring violence with it? You will ask me what is the point in all this stuff that I’m taking about, I’m going to it. The point is why in movies Mexican people are always bad guys, why are they always committing a crime? Why do they never do a movie with the main hero a Mexican? You can say that it would be unsuccessful, but did anybody even try? And I want to ask you one more question, are we going from atient entertainment to the moves or we are going back in time? How close we are to the crossing this line? Why when we are watching the news, people who committed a crime-from Mexico, why we are always hear how much trouble they did or what they destroyed? Why we never hear about great people from Mexico? Artists, painters, musicians, writers? You will say that almost no one hasn’t heard about them, but did you ever tried to look to another culture? How many truly famous artists you can name? You can say that you don’t need to know them, but if you want to look further then horizontal, if you want to be counted like educated person, you should know much more. Especially if it’s culture of your neighbor’s county, that has a lot of Spanish influence on it, if in your own country half of society knows Spanish. Why it couldn’t count like a good reason to start learning something new? Or American society doesn’t want to become better?
And finally I want to talk with you my last argument why bias on Mexican people exists in this society. Fear. What do you imagine or what you think about when you hear word fear? Everyone in this world have their own fears, fear is something that can move us forward or back, it’s something with what we live all our lives. But I’m talking not about fear of bugs, dark, get drawn, be lost somewhere No, I’m talking about massive fear, fear that can encourage us, fear that work like a weapon, fear that work like protection. I’m sure that you feel confused, and couldn’t really understand about what fear I’m talking about. Fear that “encourage” Americans to be bias to the Mexicans. I can define fear in a few subparagraphs.
One of them-fear that theoretically Mexicans will take all available jobs. Why they are doing it? They have families too, and they like everyone in the world need money just for stay even. And how I said earlier-people are moving to U.S. in hope to earn more money for their families, because of hard life in Mexico. Do you even know on what hard conditions they agree here, I will give you an example. And in my point of view, American people will never agree for conditions like these. And they will never agree for this kind of pay. People in unites states was creating organizations that can protect them from too powerful owner since decades, like labor unions, I know that it was done for better purposes and better reasons. But again, on my point of view-people in America always have choice and chance to find another job. And Mexicans that came and coming here across the border right in this moment agreed to all this, they kind “sing” secret agreement with people that they will work for. Because they don’t have any choice, they don’t any another variants. You can mention variant to live on the street on in the shelter, but will you agree for this type of life? No, you will be asking for the best for yourself, quick and better to get in free.
Another type of fear that “guides” American to the path of bias is fear that history will repeat itself. That one day Mexicans will be able to fight back, that one day they will take all the land, like before Americans did with Native- Americans. I think that Americans just afraid that all other world society will call them amoral, I think American just don’t like to be called wrong; I think that even they know that they are doing things (that they are usually against)that show another people like not equal part of society.
For conclusion…I hope my story and my facts show you, that the way American people living right now not the best way for the world power. I hope that after reading this you will try to change yourself, you friends. For me-if we are changing our self-we are changing world around us. May be it wouldn’t show immediately-but it will show on our kids, in the world in the future. And what we want if not the bright future, where everyone is treated equally? I think that was the main thought in the constitution of the United States, the main document in this country. I want to remained you, that I’m not saying that every American is bad and that every Mexican is good, no I just tired to show you, how it’s really is.
