Birdworks

Morning becomes purposeful with birds.
This early hour, roseate galahs
forage in dew-tinctured grass,
exchanging little trills of pleasure
as they feed selectively.
Other calls are jagged glass,
scoring air invisibly:
mynahs scold all winged and earthbound
predators, especially cats;
crows upbraid the world at large,
hopping self-importantly,
while magpies, done with mundane tasks,
devote themselves to melody -
purely for the love of art,
or so it seems to human ears -
perform impromptu arias in Avian.
