Ахматова - If there were a time

If there were a time when all who asked me
To allay the pain and heal the sorrow:
All the mute and God's fools, the abandoned
Women, crippled men, and all convicted
Criminals and suicidal people,
If they all had sent me just a kopeck, -
I would be "the richest dame in Egypt",
Like my late friend, poet, used to mutter.
But they never sent me just a kopeck,
They were sharing the strength and power,
Thus on this earth I've become the strongest,
So that even this - is not a hardship.

      Если б все, кто помощи душевной
      У меня просил на этом свете:
      Все юродивые и немые,
      Брошенные жены и калеки,
      Каторжники и самоубийцы
      Мне прислали по одной копейке, -
      Стала б я - "богаче всех в Египте",
      Как говаривал Кузмин покойный.
      Но они не слали мне копейки,
      А своей со мной делились силой,
      И я стала всех сильней на свете,
      Так, что даже это мне не трудно.
