Happy Birthday

(for Linda S.)

Across the ocean, across the land,
We fly ungainly on broken wings.
We met for a short while, my sudden friend,
Why memory's voice so hollow rings?

The bitter taste of unspoken words -
Our happy hours have passed away.
My heart stands still and my mind distorts.
If only I could ever find a way...

Of all 'happy birthdays' you're gonna hear
For sure the silliest would be mine,
That's why I've chosen to write, my dear,
Some lines that are horribly out of line.

It's something that can rip the world apart -
Desire and duty, dichotomy.
Don't wait till I come up with something smart,
Don't ask me what mark you could leave on me.

Just call upon me on your day of birth,
And know I'll reach out to touch your hand
From anywhere on this little Earth -
Across the ocean, across the land.
