Notwithstanding mortality

Because it is autumn,
when shadows
fall differently,
light has an eye
for deepening beauty;
because time is sipping me
ever more avidly,
brushing aside
my desire to linger;
because the sun
conspires against green
and marshals vermilion,
cerise and magenta,
while air
whets its blade
with a cast of new bronze
and the sky is a rave
of cerulean, lupin,
and leaf life colludes
with the furred
and the feathered
to bask and to listen,
awaiting some cue,
and the secretive river
meanders and glistens;
notwithstanding
mortality: to endue...
