Note the use of 'a', not 'the'...
'THE year of' has a richer ring,
orotund and more replete,
a smugness and a confidence
that process and event can be
defined and indexed, classified.
How to calibrate this year?
A year of realising my island
causeway's threatened by the tide;
of learning lost and reading forfeit
for the sake of writing, teaching;
a year when encounter
morphed to farewell:
ether bridges, separate worlds;
a year of wishing and desiring
I could still wish and desire
if there were world enough and time
to garden stars and fantasise;
a year of hungering for distance,
making do with window vistas,
shrinking space and days
that dissipate, ephemeral as dew;
a year of living with myself -
no furlough and no end in view -
conceivably the hardest thing
I'll ever have to do...
