Homesick

I have been homesick for my house
with cats and fledgeling cypresses;
the overgrown wildness of the garden
with the citrus trees; susurrating
sibylline and lisp of newly-minted leaves:
in the absence forced on me,
I have longed for these...

Returning, I am greeted by
pets' lunar topaz eyes, black fur,
a whiff of lime and bergamot,
green globules on the cumquat twigs,
vermilion-tasselled grenadines:
these manifold simplicities...

I loved the absolutely adorable sound play throughout the poem: the swishing “s” in the “sick” portion and the grounding “g” in the “greeted” part. Lovely!
