Subtropical September
while vivid bougainvillaea
samba schools pull focus to the visual.
That shrub which goes under the name
of 'yesterday, today, tomorrow'
smothers in its three phases
of white, lilac and violet,
whose exhalations register
as one seductive distillation.
Spring would like to linger
in its fragrance-emanating aura,
baring its white shoulders
to September evenings by the river.
It will cease abruptly
in brutalities of heat and horror:
dark squadrons of flying foxes
terrorising fruiting trees.
