Longing
Joseph Brodsky
I inquire but never require,
Not a soloist but a one-man choir,
Seek no baby to light my fire,
Have no desire,
Not yet.
My domain is a river and rain.
I've never been into material gain.
Don't ask how am I doing - I can't complain.
I feel no pain,
Not yet.
Anyone's allowed to live on a cloud.
I shut my mouth and think out loud.
I am what I am when not in the crowd.
You don't have to shout:
I hear you.
The things that I know ain't easy to show.
It's dark inside us but occasional glow.
Not yet on the stake but the first in a row,
Everything that I owe -
You can have it.
Lessons I should have learnt,
Bridges I failed to burn,
Could not stop me from looking for you
At each turn.
Are you close? - for I can wait no more.
You shall not miss my door,
Not yet.
