Tennis by moonlight
has been attacked by secateurs,
hacked and pruned by gardeners
to geometric, boxlike order;
calyces incised by shears
exude bruised aphrodisiacs,
nycthemeral, sense-shifting fragrances.
Above, a slightly buckled moon
backlights pearl-petalled cirrus banks,
illuminating drifts of dying sepals
on the pebbled border.
Planetoids arc overhead
across the arbitrary net, simulating
Neptune's moons, or Jupiter's.
