Jane Eyre

(Originally written by Charlotte Bronte, retold in verse by me)

I want to tell you a few words
About a girl.
Her name was Jane, her last name - Eyre,
That is all! (I’m joking)

At the beginning of the book
She was just nine.
She lived with the aunt, who hated her.
It wasn’t fine.

She had three cousins:
Elza, John and Georgiana.
They teased her, laughed at her
And didn’t let her play the piano.

Jane was an orphan:
No mother, no dad.
Her life was difficult
And everything was bad.

But she was kind,
Very talented and smart.
She liked to read, to draw, to sing
And in her heart

She was away from the gloomy place
She had to stay.
Jane wanted to be loved
And live in a happy way.

Jane quarreled with her aunt,
She punished her severely
And kept her in a room with ghosts
And Jane was frightened merely.

And she lived in this way
For many days
Until there happened
Very memorable case:

The aunt of Jane decided to get rid
Of this small girl
And sent her to a boarding school
With prohibition for curl.

The school was not at all
A lovely place
With terrible conditions for life.
And Janie had to face

New difficulties, lack of food
And strictest discipline,
And also cruel teachers, cold, humiliation
And burnt oats to dine.

She had the only friend at school,
Her name was Helen Burns,
She was a friendly girl, a nice girl,
Though a lazy-bones.

They spent much time together,
They read books,
Discussed ideas, teachers
And unfair cooks.

But as ill luck would have it,
A terrible disease inhabited the school
And Helen Burns got ill and died.
Jane was sorrowful.

She loved her friend, she wanted her to live
But Helen died, no one could relieve
Jane’s pane, the loneliest of girls
In the asylum, where girls had no curls.

But time is a healer
And Jane’s wound was healed.
She left that awful school,
And so, this bird was killed.

She was a teacher,
Needing money to survive
And that is why
She soon decided to apply

To some rich family
And work as a private teacher
Of a small girl
And teach her how to draw a picture

And also English, French
And other things as well,
The things that Jane knew
Very-very well.

And soon she was employed
By a rich man from Thornfield
He was heroic-looking, handsome,
Middle-aged and well-built.

He wasn’t tall at all, he wasn’t gracious
He could be gloomy all the day.
He lived with a small girl – Adelie
She was his daughter, by the way.

Jane liked her work
And this small girl
Who was extremely pretty
And had golden curl.

Jane got new friends,
She liked her room and the entire house
But there was a woman
Who was never quiet like a mouse.

She shouted at night
And frightened all the people
She was a bit of fool
And it was strange a little.

 Bertha Masson was her name
And she lived in the attic
And all the people knew
That she was mad, she was lunatic.

Mr. Rochester was busy, he wasn’t friendly
He was even rude
At first Jane was afraid of him
But everything went good.

They often talked,
They spent much time together
And very soon
They made good friends forever.

One night there happened
One extremely awful thing:
Jane woke at night with fear
And heard one cry or sing.

And then there was
An awful laugh in the corridor
She dressed and went there
To learn about it more.

And when she was there
Some shrieks could be heard
They were pronounced
By neither animal, nor bird.

And she smelt the smell of burning
And she rushed to Edward’s door.
There was everything on fire
There was a candle on the floor.

Mr. Rochester was sleeping
He was poisoned with smoke.
Jane emptied a pitcher full of water,
He was saved, at last… he woke.

After the accident that happened
Edward wanted to have rest
And he went away for a fortnight
But soon returned and brought a guest.

It was a young and pretty woman
Her eyes were beautiful and wide
And Jane learnt with disappointment
That she was Edward’s future bride.

Jane could not believe her feelings
She wanted to get rid of them
She was both afraid and happy
Because she was in love with him.

Jane was terribly unhappy
When she saw him kiss the lady’s face
Jane was sure, they would marry
And she wanted t’ leave the place.

But one night when Jane was walking
With Mr. Rochester in park…
It was warm and very quiet
And they saw the stars that spark.

They were sitting on a bench
And he took her little hand
Then he said that he would marry
The best lady in that land.

And he said, he was in love
And his love was great and strong.
It was difficult for Jane
To hear all these words for long.

And she told him in despair
That would leave and they would part
But he looked at her, sat near…
And offered her his hand and heart!

She did not believe his words
And she thought that he was joking
But he said that he loved her,
That it was truth and then … stopped talking.

Jane looked in Edward’s eyes
And saw that he was earnest
His eyes were full of love
And he was frank and honest.

And then he asked her once again
To marry him and be his dear wife
And she agreed, of course, because he was
The greatest love of all her life.

And they went to church one day,
It was cold and wind was blowing
Jane got suddenly exсited
When she saw a stranger going.

So, they entered that small church
And the service soon began
The clergyman was calm and solemn
He took a candle and a book but than…

The awful stranger reached the altar
And broke the process of development
Of the service and this marriage,
He said that there was an impediment.

And he told the priest and Jane
That Mr. Rochester was married
And his wife was still alive.
And it all made Janie scared.

Soon they went away from church
And returned to Thornfield Hall
And he showed them this Bess Masson
Who was fat and very tall.

Yes! She was his wife and she was crazy
As all the members of her family had been
And she was dangerous; she was a kind of killer
She reached the party and her evil eyes were seen.

And it was such an awful creature
That no one could stop
And, that’s why, she was a prisoner
Who lived in the attic, at the top.

And so, the story runs, as follows,
And in despair, late at night
Jane thought it over and decided
To leave the man who was her knight.

She took her things, a little money
And in the morning left the place,
And she went away to where
She could forget her might-be husband’s face.

And she went to a small village,
It was cold; she starved and had much pain
She tried to find a job, a place to live
(At least a rusk to eat) But all this was in vain.

She walked from house to house,
Looking for generous people,
Who could feed her and give her a shelter
But they gave her just bread, very little.

And, at last,
When she was barely alive
She met some people
And they saved her life.

These people: John, Diana, Marry
Were friendly, very kind to Jane.
And she liked them and she was very grateful,
Because they helped her overcome her pain.

Mr. John and his two kind sisters
One day decided t’ open a private school
And, of course, they wanted Jane to work there
And she did it in the autumn that was cool.

So, Jane was happy
And her dreams were almost realized
But very soon one day or may be evening,
She was again surprised:

Her uncle from the West Indies was dead
And she inherited a great amount of money.
And she was very rich,
Her life could be light and funny.

But one night she dreamt
About her beloved
And he was calling her
And when she woke, she felt that she was loved.

And she decided after that
To visit Thornfield Hall
Just to see Edward once again,
To talk about it all.

And, so, she went there,
Her way was not so easy
She was excited,
Worried and uneasy.

And on her way she met a man
Who told her an awful piece of news
The entire place was ruined
And then she saw the gloomy views.

The mansion was burnt
It all had been on fire,
Bertha Masson caused all this,
That nasty creature, full of ire.

And Mr. Rochester was badly injured
The fire caught his eyes and he went blind
But when Jane Eyre heard all this
She did not change her mind.

Her heart and soul ached
She loved him more than ever,
She wanted to find him
And stay with him forever.

And when Jane learnt about the place,
Where Rochester was living
She went there at once
And saw him, not believing

That she was with him at last
And that it was forever
That she would be loved by him
And they would marry ever.

They talked that night a lot
She told him how she lived
 Then he proposed his hand
 And she, of course, agreed.

And they lived happily ever after!

With best wishes,

Your Angel.
