Albizia prepares for winter

One week later, wads of stamens
clog the boughs like dirty snow
discoloured by thaw's muddy
underlay that trickles through.
On the crown, fresh ivory tufts
compete for breathing space.

The tree will be transmogrified
by winter, stripped of foliage,
massed with tarnished-metal votives
cast in brittle, slender pods,
seeds rattling insistently
as abacus, ad hoc percussion
multiplied and magnified
with every frosty gust...
