Wandering Albatross

Diomedea exulans

Creatures of three elements,
water, earth, unbridled air,
ice and tempest as their fare,
tireless wings their recompense,
they range the lonely spaces between continents
where few birds dare,
and fewer still survive the lines that snare
the Antarctic convergence.

Known to intrepid souls from Coleridge to Shackleton,
sign of life to voyagers whose course
is arduous and long, distant kin to cosmonauts,
a common sight in Elsehul, apparition
to the helmsman, harbingers of island landfall,
great white birds give rise to visions and transcend them all.
