The Thought of You

Water represents neutrality,
especially of a cloudy noon,
when shades of pewter and dove-grey
liquefy beneath their neuter prototype.

At a point where vapour
meets the surface of its looking-glass
I board the river ferry
for a journey to the city,
where, in vitreous array,
the towers raise oblong facades
in sober palettes dark as slate
or pale as sand.

Into uninflected space
and watery expanse
stray random thoughts,
subverting the detachment
balancing on mood,
prompting me to search the cloud
for just a hint of blue,
scan the buildings
for a flash of red
that might spell attitude.

Form and line and colour
reinvent my muted field of view
in nebulous, impressionistic
but intensely wistful hues,
imbued with that peculiar
and excruciating seventh sense,
a silvery nostalgia, inextricable
from thoughts of you.
