Sunflowers and Thunderstorm

They raise their petalled aureoles
in calm defiance of the storm,
indomitable gold
against the brooding, bruising thunderheads,
and when the vehemence of threat
disintegrates in violet threads,
they turn their backs to where the vanquished
sun has set, and face the east-
shields, challenging malign intent,
their colour saturated, dense,
glistening with rain's loose gems, 
earth's nebulae of radiance...
