Hippocampus
you penetrate the limen separating words from mythic mind
and contemplate the images that rise like spring's ecstatic birds;
pelagic monsters surfacing from hidden depths of the sublime…
The mountains of mythology bred sturdy creatures who could climb -
wild Cheiron's clan, half-horse, half-man, superior to lowland herds;
Poseidon, watching jealously, conceived a creature more refined -
equine-marine, a sea-god's dream, half reason and half rhyme.
The catenations of the sea had known no such progeny -
Poseidon's sons, half-horse, half-dolphin, given to posterity -
and in the Oceanids' songs, the sagas of migrating whales,
leviathans perpetuate the echoes of old wonder-tales.
The hippocampus travels at the humpback's hyperbolic side
as tiny seahorse, foaled by foam, a lace-like Lilliputian guide…
