Aegean Wooden Shutters

Shutters are the lungs of dwellings,
diaphragms for air and sound,
sublimating undiluted radiance
in canted rays, transforming dim
interiors to subaquatic caves.

Refractions of the rising tide
shimmer, lambent webs of light;
susurrus of sea on shale, a ferry
siren's warning wail, disembodied
dialogues, voices from the surface
world infiltrate the private space
through mediating gills of laths.

Morning seeps through apertures
with quiet intensity; midnight
dreams slip out through them
to pace the balcony...
