A wreath of lotus floats as if on water,
inscribed upon an ancient golden band,
a ring that might have graced a royal hand,
the keepsake of a pharaonic daughter -
of Cleopatra - gift designed to court her,
mnemonic of a realm engulfed by sand,
where portals to the afterlife still stand,
long after lavish banquets, vanished laughter.
The mystic lotus of the goddess Isis;
Anubis, Hathor, Horus and Osiris,
survive as hieroglyphs upon papyrus -
elusive as doomed dynasties of lions,
the legendary seductress of Rome's scions,
whose river is still home to sacred ibis.
