The Mysteries

An archetypal legend tells
how guardians of cosmic truth
sought a safe place to protect
profound and ancient mysteries.

One suggested mountain peaks -
the others quietly disagreed.
"They'd climb up there and find
the keys too easily," they said.

Another pointed to the sea -
"There, in the undiscovered depths?"
The others sagely shook their heads -
"They'd dive, if treasure could be had."

A third said they should trust
the earth with secrets of the universe,
but no - the others all agreed -
they'd excavate them with their spades.

A sage who'd listened silently
voiced one more possibility -
"Conceal the secrets in their souls -
they'll search for them elsewhere," he said.
