Monastery of Kaisariani
rocks, wild hyacinths, the steep
climb upward through a colonnade
of trees. Cloisters of cypresses
austere as classic draperies
encompassing the monastery,
dark frankincense of pines;
the scars of shrapnel
healing under balm of thyme.
My fingers press a sprig
of rosemary - an image is released:
that cold spring day you brought
me to this sanctuary (first thorn
of grief); in these ascetic Attic
hills, I sense your spirit breathe.
The saint's eyes question me.
Can faith engender life?
The dead white wax
flares suddenly with light.
Note: The Monastery of Kaisariani was used as an execution
ground for partisans resisting the Nazi occupation of Greece.
