Lorikeets in Umbrella Tree

Vermilion, green and purple birds
at work with curved, voracious beaks
offer a feast to the eye as they eat
red star-clusters on the umbrella-tree.

Observers' ears are regaled as well,
when, squabbling over territory,
the lorikeets with squawk and shriek
trade curses with mynas from overseas.

No feathers are shed
in the avian squall,
and soon they decide
there's enough fruit for all.
