Diaspora of islands
yielded forms that stripped
their subjects bare,
clean as the marble
hewn from Naxian quarries,
anticipating semi-abstract
figures of modernity,
Picasso and Matisse,
and Modigliani.
A smooth stone head
rests heavy in my hand,
its ancestry an artefact
of four millennia ago:
poet, shepherd, fisherman -
I cannot know; only this
cold shape, this moulded
density that I must hold:
such radical simplicity,
such nakedness.
