Flying-foxes

The city bounces light off cloud
as chains of perfectly-formed rain
return to earth like souls reincarnating;
and through the sweet tears of the air
swoop gleaming hooked wings
like umbrella sections, to propel
strange foxy-featured creatures
with soft fur, who feast on berries
glistening like dark gems
on the Chinese elms, exclaiming
raucously in sudden outpourings
of greed or pleasure.
