Apart from the greater griefs,
one common disadvantage of being old
is that, from waking to sleep,
you simply haven't enough to do.
All the words have been said;
the funeral arrangements have been made.
The meaning of life, you decide,
is that it has no meaning.
What about your achievements?
Well, you have achieved them: and so what?
You've done them; they are done;
and now, you have no end in view –
except that obvious one.
Well, that at least you can look forward to!
Secret of life, old soul:
always face the future with a goal.
