Priest - A Modern Tale

Once lived a modern English priest,
Not wealthy, well-to-do at least.
He was not idiot, was not fool,
He always kept his belly full.
He was not clever, not at all.
To reach the heaven was his goal.
He’d even seen catholic Pope,
But once he bought a telescope…
He saw the sky and was surprised:
“O devil, put away my eyes!
Saint Patrick, I can’t see a god!
God’s mother, where is holy Lord?
I thought the Sun goes round the Earth,
But what is this? My faith is lost!
I can’t believe, I am upset,
I must give up, I must forget!”
Then telescope was thrown away.
He went to bishop the next day.
“Why does Earth go around the Sun?”
“It’s evil heresy, my son!”
“I can’t see god, what has begun?”
“It’s evil heresy, my son!”
“Oh please tell me what must be done?”
“It’s evil heresy, my son!”
“Your logic is so full and clear!”
“I know. You now may go, my dear.”
That priest then made sincere prayer
And went to bed… But then nightmare
Came to his mind. He saw a dream,
The picture was not bright but dim…
His soul came to the modern hell.
Oh, awful sight! Oh, awful smell!
He met old devil. Soon he heard
Of greatest demon final word:
“New little human – piece of flesh.
That sounds tasty, nice, and fresh!
And by the way there is no god
And archangels with wings and sword.
I properly misguide the fools,
And angels are my evil tools.”
The priest woke up in tears and sweat.
He prayed, but he could not forget.
His head turned grey, and in the fall
He died, he perished. That is all!
