In Front of the Screen

Son sat me down one quiet night,
A spark of wonder in his eyes so bright.
“How did you live without the screens,
Without Netflix shows or computer dreams?”
He crossed his amrs, the dear prancer,
Awaiting for the truth in my answer.

I sighed softly, and took his hand,
Rewinding back to my youth land.

We lived without shoping, without social media,
But we had all the things the soul truly needed.
Laughter in fields, beneath starry skies,
Dreams we painted with our naked eyes.
No swipe, no click, no flashing display,
Just heart to heart in the old-fashioned way.
But, tell me son, how do you breathe,
Without prayer, without care, what are your beliefs?

“You see,” I said, “days were long but sweet,
We found our joy in the faces we’d meet.
Time moved slower, the world felt wide,
Connection didn’t need a satellite guide.”
He shook his head, puzzled and withdrawn,
His fingertips restless, tapping on and on.

“You’ve got the world in your hands,” I sighed,
“But somewhere, son, did your spirit hide?”

We lived without shoping, without social media,
But we had all the things the soul truly needed.
Dinner table talks, the warmth of a smile,
Building memories one brick at a time.
No swipe, no click, no flashing display,
Just heart to heart in the old-fashioned way.
But tell me, son, how do you thrive,
Without empathy, how do you keep your love?

The church bells rang, we’d bow and pray,
For strength to walk through another day.
Neighbors weren't strangers, we'd lend a hand,
Together we stood, a united band.
But now the world spins in constant haste,
Eyes on screens, so much lost in the chase.

We lived without links and endless feeds,
And son, we had all the things the soul truly needs.
Kindness that bridged every divide,
A world where compassion didn’t hide.
No swipe, no click, no hollow embrace,
Just soul to soul, at a slower pace.
But can you see, this modern race,
Leaves little room for human grace?

He looked at me, his head hung low,
The silence speaking of things he seemed to know.
'Teach me, Dad, to live like you,
To feel the world as it once was new.”
So we turned off the screens, let the stillness fall,
We embraced and found ourselves in that world.
