When We Were Young

There was an exciting and lively game,
Fans were contented with our score,
We played for pleasure but not for fame –
That was enjoyment but not a war.
And the equitable referee
Envied a bit not to play with us –
He was just decent, we played just free
Without that sordid and cruel fouls.
We thanked one another for “fair play”–
That was the prize – but now who can
Play so unselfish for just one day?..
…The match was so bright and we were so young.
